Obama in Complete Control of The Internet?

From Mother Jones and E-week via Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion:

Should Obama Control the Internet?

Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) think so.  On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor—an arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.

The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 introduced on April 1 in the Senate would allow Obama to shut down private Internet networks.  The bill would also give the president unprecedented authority over private-sector applications and software.

Obama would have broad authority to designate various private networks as a "critical infrastructure system or network" and, with no other review, "may declare a cyber-security emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from" the designated the private-sector system or network.

The 51-page bill does not define what private sector networks would be considered critical to the nation's security, but the Center for Democracy and Technology fears it could include communications networks in addition to the more traditional security concerns over the financial and transportation networks and the electrical grid.

According to a number of media reports, the bill was crafted with the cooperation of the White House

Can pretty guarentee the ACLU will not pipe up on this one, like they did about Patriot Act.

The net is source of free thinking. It only makes sense he is going to control it. Back to printing pamphlets I guess. Time to get the two way radio up and running.

Why aren't the sheeple waking up to all these bills before Congress to realize our rights are quickly being yanked an at alarming rate?

I believe even some on the left would balk at this.

NLTA: Obama is working to create new powers for himself; powers that would have been unthinkable just a short time ago.

CS: It will be VERY interesting to see what the ACLU has to say about this.

M: Time to dig up the old mimeograph machine.

CB: America is apparently in a stupor.

RV: You'd think so. We will soon find out.

WHT: It is nothing short of an outrage. If Obama is going to continue to trash America, and literally bow to foreingn potentates, he is abdicating his role as our representative.

We have no one representing US. That is the outrage. Without representation, we are living under tyranny. This isn't hyperbole, it's a fact.

Don't you people get it? Obama also wants a Civilian National Seucirty Force, funded more than the US Military. See his Iowa Speech. And he want control of banking and manufacturing.

Can;t you see the impending domination of YOU by HIS government? Obama will ration energy use (with Google monitors). Obama will ration health care. Feeling a bit sick? Well you just may be declared too old or too risky so no medicine for you. Go euthanize!

Can;t you people see where Obama is taking us? The Libs whined baout Bush and the Patriot Act. In a few weekns Obama has taken control of banking, auto manufacturing, the governement where nothing is read or transparent nor presented to US.

Obama is dangerous. Arrogant and ignorant. He thinks he is the savior.

Anon: The same media that fawn over Castro and Chavez have worked very hard to ensure that America doesn't see what's happening here.

It is a lot more complicated than "Obama just taking complete control". The internet, especially considering the changes to The Grid, is very complex; meaning taking control of it, would only be a very expensive and time consuming plan.

Anonymous Lee: "expensive and time consuming"

Obama has plenty of time and tons of money.

The stimulus package includes $7.2 billion for broadband grant and loan programs.

$350 million will fund the Broadband Data Improvement Act, to develop a broadband inventory map and provide for certain grants.

Obama can use these spending projects (and others like them) to his advantage. Government spending always comes with strings attached.
