Stem Cell Research And Cloning

On Monday, Obama rolled back Bush's restrictions on on federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. Upon announcing his plan, Obama made some interesting comments:

"The majority of Americans - from across the political spectrum, and of all backgrounds and beliefs - have come to a consensus that we should pursue this research, that the potential it offers is great, and with proper guidelines and strict oversight, the perils can be avoided."

Perils?  What perils?

"...the use of cloning for human reproduction: it is dangerous, profoundly wrong, and has no place in our society, or any society."

Wow...strong words.  I'm not accustomed to hearing Obama speak with such moral clarity.  Obama did not explain how he has drawn his conclusions, but this is how it boils down:

Grinding up human embryos to harvest cells and make spare parts — Good

Using human embryos to make more babies — Bad

Does this make sense?  If so, in what moral framework is this so obvious that it requires no explanation?

Wikipedia scrubs Obama page clean of critical entries.

Will you be going Galt?

Government should not have any role of any kind in stem cell research. Leave that to the medical research corporations and foundations. Leave my tax dollars out of it!

PCC: You've reminded me of a great quote by TJ: "To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical."

...I'm going to post it...

It won't matter. It will be done. It's being done right now. All over The USA and elsewhere. Obama won't stop it. Who in America is honestly listening to Obama? No one. America laughs. America clones!!

It's always about embryos, which is distrubing to me. There are other sources like cord blood, that is rich in stem cells without destroying a viable embryo.

At the very least, keep the government and tax dollars out of it.

Ditto America's comment. It is going on right now and has been for some time...

The illogic...supposedly O is saying "no politics" in science. Then he immediately goes on to say that embryonic cell research is fine and dandy but cloning is not. What is cloning prohibition but another political decision? It certainly isn't based on science.

Not that I disagree with the "no cloning stance' - just the two positions juxaposed are ridiculous.

Not sure about going John Galt, but what about Shays' Rebellion.

His teleprompter must work like the magic 8 ball after it's been shaken.

All he needs is one more correct statement and he will match the accuracy of a stopped watch in a 24 hour cycle.

America: You're right...it's very strange to think that Obama really believes that he can stop the development of reproductive technology.

GJ: Obama knows nothing about this technology. He apparently just likes the idea of harvesting embryos.

Adrienne: I think the real reason Obama is opposed to human cloning (and related technology) is that only the relatively wealthy will be able to afford it. It offends his Marxist sensibilities.

Suek: Obama contradicts himself constantly. He know the truth would damage him.

RV: He's pandering

CS: I don't know but I think the country could begin to break apart if liberals continue to try to concentrate power in Washington.

DaBlade: That's so true. His arrogance is surpassed only by his incompetence.

my favorite of THE ONE's quotes on this subject is how we must allow FACTS to trump IDEOLOGY. Postively scary, when you consider the FACTS show adult stem cells are already proving far more effective than embryonic.

This is all AGENDA, folks.

>>This is all AGENDA, folks.>>

You betchya. Especially when you combine it with the fact that at the same time he removed the restrictions on federal funding for ESCR, he also removed federal funding for the adult stem research.

What the heck?????? what about all that no politics - just science thing again?????

No, as to anything Obama doing making sense.

~and~
Yes to going Galt...I pray many will feel the same.

Z: Yes, he's catering to special interests.

Suek: You know Obama is telling a lie when his lips are moving. Sorry...just had to say that...and it's practically true.

HW: Going Galt...its a very attractive idea.

This saddens me - Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for experiments that require the destruction of human life!

This embryonic research has never been limited by law or the government The reason the private sector will not fund this research is because they have found it leads them literally to a dead end. Embryonic stem cell research has not produced any positive results and has NEVER helped a single patient, and has proven most adept at generating tumors.

Obama has used the president's pen to create and damn millions of innocent children around the world to death, all in his bizarre mutilation of the concept of "humanity."

If life itself is not sacred, then nothing on earth is sacred anymore!

More money wasted and more innocent lives killed! That is all he stands for.
