Obituary For Common Sense

An old favorite:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
.
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

My dad always said your are either born with common sense, or not. It isn't something you can learn, but it is also not being taught today.

I've read this before, but it needs to be repeated again and again.

Thanks for the post.

Common sense is only dead in about 52% of the population. Don't include me in its death. But I do agree that the progression you present is on path for its death. You can't count on the entitlement generation to keep it alive.

Good post on the loss of common sense...sad to admit all truth.

Thanks again for keeping us up on Obama once again not keeping a promise. Gosh it has been so long since he took office that he may be a bit hazy on what he promised.

I'm with Clay, about half the population still has their wits about them (common sense), and the rest will come around once they hit bottom. I hope I live to see that day.

LG: They used to knock sense into people...guess that's not PC anymore.

CB: 52% of the apple is rotten. How do we salvage this mess?

HW: He's breaking promises as fast as he makes them. I suppose this is why his approval index is plummeting. (It's now at 6.)

GJ: Hitting bottom? Is that how sense gets knocked into people now? Perhaps there is hope.

Great post. I'm glad there are some of us out here with some Common Sense left. Few and far between it seems. But we are here ready to fight!!!

Common sense died of self inflicted wounds for sure.

Maybe he will come back from the dead, like Spock did after his coffin was scuttled down to the surface of planet Genesis, and he sparked back to life as a boy...

Pistolmom: thanks, and thanks for visiting.

DaBlade: it will be nothing short of a miracle if common sense is revived. The media are working full time to ensure there is no comeback.
