Are You Happy Now?

At the height of Obamamania, between the election and Obama's inauguration, I challenged liberal readers to look into the future and ask themselves if there was anything Obama could ever do to lose their support. To my everlasting surprise, I got some answers...
Is there anything Obama could do to lose your support? If so, what?

Easily. For instance, he could...

1. Fail to end the war in Iraq.
2. Have a heavy-handed, questionably legal foreign policy in which he has the US invade countries and conduct attacks that result in killing innocent people or breaking US and int'l law.
3. In general, act as if the US is above the law
4. Continue to prop up the auto and oil industries, and in general provide welfare to corporations
5. Fail to begin to wean US over-dependence on fossil fuels.

For starters...
Twenty-seven months later...
You voted for Obama ― Are you happy now?

Serve Obama!

Warmongers

What do we have to show for the $3 trillion, the 4,200 Americans lives, and the 95,000 Iraqi civilians sacrificed in the Iraq war? The end of a brutal dictatorship, a brighter future in Iraq, a more secure America, and a few barrels of oil? What a terrible price to pay for such trivial things! Democracy isn't worth a single drop of blood, and if we would put up a few windmills and inflate our tires properly, we could do without Iraqi oil. Just think about how many free abortions could have been provided with the money spent killing people in Iraq.

Peace-lovers all over the world have been looking forward to the end of the Bush regime. The day has almost arrived. In a few short weeks, the warmonger-in-chief will be gone forever. But now is not the time to rest on our laurels. We must end the careers and assassinate the characters of all of his warmongering accomplices in order to put an end to their evil machinations. Here are some comments from some of Bush's bloodthirsty friends.
  • "In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members...if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security." Hillary Clinton (warmonger), October 10, 2002. We must not allow Hillary Clinton to become Secretary of State!
  • "The community of nations may see more and more of the very kind of threat Iraq poses now: a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction, ready to use them or provide them to terrorists. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow." Bill Clinton (warmonger), 1998. Do not contribute to the William J. Clinton foundation or do business with anyone who does (e.g. Bill Gates, Elton John, the Government of Norway, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, & the Alltel Corporation).
  • "The debate over Iraq is not about politics. It is about national security. It should be clear that our national security requires Congress to send a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction." John Edwards (warmonger), Oct 10, 2002. Don't let John Edwards out of the doghouse!
  • "Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." Al Gore (warmonger), 2002. Boycott Al Gore's carbon credit scheme.
  • "There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein's regime is a serious danger, that he is a tyrant, and that his pursuit of lethal weapons of mass destruction cannot be tolerated. He must be disarmed." Ted Kennedy (warmonger), Sept 27, 2002. Just say no to Ted Kennedy (and Caroline for that matter).
  • "As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." Nancy Pelosi (warmonger), December 16, 1998. The speaker of the House must go!

Miracle: My angry comment was posted on Chrysler's blog. Looks like I'm not the only one.

Time to let John Edwards out of the doghouse? I don't think so.

Iraq Is Not Ready for Democracy

From the New York Post and various news sources:

An Iraqi journalist who threw his shoe at President Bush has been hailed as a hero.

"This is a farewell kiss, you dog," Al-Baghdadia TV correspondent Muntadar al-Zeidi shouted as he hurled one of his shoes at Bush in the middle of a news conference.  Bush ducked as the shoe zoomed over his head and crashed into the wall behind the podium.  Just as the stunned president regained his composure, al-Zeidi threw his second shoe, shouting, "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

The secret service was apparently AWOL.

Al-Zeidi was arrested, of course, and he now faces up to seven years in prison.  But thousands of people have taken to the streets in Iraq to demand the release of al-Zeidi, who is still being held at the headquarters of the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

After the incident the Iraqi government criticised al-Zaidi's action and "demanded" an on-air apology from Al-Baghdadia TV.  Al-Baghdadia TV issued a statement demanding al-Zaidi's release: "Al-Baghdadia television demands that the Iraqi authorities immediately release al-Zaidi, in line with the democracy and freedom of expression that the American authorities promised the Iraqi people on the ousting of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Any measures against Muntadhar will be considered the acts of a dictatorial regime".

Hundreds of students at Diyala University in Baquba carried banners demanding the release of Muntadhar al-Zaidi -- described by demonstrators as an "honorable Iraqi."

Predictably, al-Zaidi has fans not only in Iraq, but throughout the Middle East and all over the world.  A charity run by the daughter of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi bestowed a medal of courage on al-Zeidi, calling on the Iraqi government to free him.  In Syria, Mr. Zaidi’s picture was shown all day on state television, with Syrians calling in to share their admiration for his gesture and his bravery.

Despite the pleas of his worldwide fans, the AP reports that the journalist was handed over to the Iraqi judiciary Tuesday.

Alexis de Tocqueville said that "In a Democracy, the people get the government they deserve."  The Iraqi people had better hope this isn't true.  The "shoe bomber" episode proves one thing very poignantly: Iraq is not ready for democracy and doesn't deserve it.

Consider the following: earlier this decade Saddam Hussein was routinely administering torture of all kinds: branding, electric shocks, beating, pulling out fingernails, burning with hot irons and blowtorches, suspension from rotating ceiling fans, dripping acid on the skin, rape, breaking limbs, extended solitary confinement in dark and extremely small compartments, and threats to rape or otherwise harm family members and relatives.

Bush brought all that to an end.  Now, after having been liberated from the Hussein regime, Iraqis are sympathizing with the shoe thrower.  Warning to Iraqis: this kind of thinking will buy you front row tickets to another dictatorial regime faster than you can say "Allāhu Akbar".

I'm guessing that the Iraqi media are at least as irresponsible and anti-Bush as the American media are, so to some extent, I can forgive the Iraqis for behaving in such an ignorant fashion.  But it is shocking to me how quickly they have forgotten how evil Saddam Hussein's regime was.

They want the U.S. out?  I say "be careful what you wish for."  Democracy in Iraq will be very short-lived.

Reid: $700 billion bailout not working.  So...the bailout of the financial industry is failing, but the bailout of the auto industry is a great idea?  Can you predict what Reid will say next?  How about this: “I actually did vote for the $700 billion before I voted against it.”
