Insurance Utopia

Obama has some fantastic ideas for health insurance reform:

No Discrimination for Pre-Existing Conditions: Insurance companies will be prohibited from refusing you coverage because of your medical history.

No Cost-Sharing for Preventive Care: Insurance companies must fully cover, without charge, regular checkups and tests that help you prevent illness, such as mammograms or eye and foot exams for diabetics.

No Gender Discrimination: Insurance companies will be prohibited from charging you more because of your gender.

No Exorbitant Out-of-Pocket Expenses, Deductibles or Co-Pays: Insurance companies will have to abide by yearly caps on how much they can charge for out-of-pocket expenses.

Extended Coverage for Young Adults: Children would continue to be eligible for family coverage through the age of 26.

What could go wrong with ideas such as these? My only concern is that these reforms don't go far enough. Obama should boldly extrapolate from these ideas, and he should impose them not just on the health insurance industry, but on the insurance industry at large. Here are some examples:

No Discrimination for Pre-Existing Conditions: Why not expand this idea to homeowner's insurance? Insurance companies should be prohibited from refusing to sell you a policy simply because your house is already on fire.

No Cost-Sharing for Preventive Care: Auto insurance companies should fully cover, without charge, preventative maintenance such as oil changes or tire rotation.

No Age or Gender Discrimination: How is it fair to charge a 16 year-old dude 4 times as much as his 45 year old mom for car insurance? Sure, teenage boys can be a little impulsive, but they have the reflexes of a cheetah. Auto insurance companies should be prohibited from charging you more because of your age or gender.

No Exorbitant Out-of-Pocket Expenses, Deductibles or Co-Pays: This is a no-brainer. The insurance companies are making obscene profits…the Imperial Federal Government should completely abolish out-of-pocket expenses.

Extended Coverage for Young Adults: Children should continue to be eligible for family health insurance coverage through the age of 64. This idea sells itself. When eligibility for family coverage expires, Medicare kicks in — simply brilliant.

Great post! I'm glad someone finally pointed out the fact that Obama's health insurance is nothing like insurance. Why would anybody pay Obama insurance before they were sick? It's a waste of money.

Yes, you better save your pennies, you are going to need them.

CG: Thanks. As with any redistribution scheme, ObamaCare will create a "tragedy of the commons" scenario. The system will encourage cheating and over-utilization.

AlwaysRight: Obama's coming after all of it.

CS: Sorry I missed it. Had prior commitment in NC. Looks like it was quite a success. AJC playing it down of course.

Next time I have a fender-bender, I'm gonna run right out and get some auto insurance.

I'm with Obama... let the insurance companies take care of me!

NG: Obama knows he can't kill private heath insurance with a direct hit, so he'll try to kill them with lethal regulations.

Well of course. If only those ObamaCare supporters would realize that the healthcare industry and the auto industry are the exact same thing.
