Demokrat Congressman Explodes on Constituent

In response to a comment on a recent post, I said that "Congress needs to feel the rhetorical pain until their attitudes have been thoroughly adjusted." At the time, I thought I might have been pushing the envelope with that statement, but apparently I was on the right track:

The scene of a Metro Atlanta town hall meeting quickly deteriorated when Democratic Congressman David Scott (GA-13) suddenly became enraged, and, in a breathtaking display of congressional machismo, began berating constituents.

Scott displayed his temper during a question-and-answer period when Brian Hill, a local resident and doctor, questioned the congressman over his support of President Barack Obama’s proposed single-payer health care system.

“Why are you voting for a health care plan that is shown not to work in Massachusetts and why are you going to institute that in a nation-wide manner?”

With a look of confusion on his face, the congressman first quietly asked an aide, “Is that the type of bill they got going on?” Then, reassured by staff that the bill Hill referenced was, in fact, the bill before Congress, Scott proceeded to respond, insomuch as the Congressman’s angry tirade may be called a response.

“I’m listening to my constituents, OK,” Scott said, with a heavy and awkward emphasis on “my.” “These are people who live in the 13th Congressional district, who vote in this district. That’s who I’'ve got to respond to, OK. Right, alright.”

Grimacing and sternly brandishing his finger at Dr. Hill, Scott’s anger intensified, as did his rhetoric.

“You chose to come and to do it on your own. Not a single one of you had the decency to call my office and set up for a meeting, OK. Do that. Do that!”

At one point Scott chastised some in the crowd for "hijacking" the meeting.

Before yielding the microphone to a staffer, Scott gave an austere warning to Dr. Hill and others present: “Don’t, don’t come and take advantage of what these individuals have done. You want a meeting with me on health care, I’ll give it to you. You come on August 24th. On August 28th.”

Local Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA-TV reports that Hill, a verified resident of Georgia’s 13th district, has attempted, on multiple occasions and all in vain, to secure sit-downs with the incensed Congressman, however.

Here's the video (poor audio):

The doctor told the reporters he wasn't working for any outside causes and had
called Mr. Scott's office repeatedly, asking to speak with the congressman.

"I did not go to a meeting to create any problems, I went to the meeting to literally ask a question that I thought was very, very important for my patients," he said.

Some astute observations from American Power:

The man in the clip, Brian Hill, a doctor, is exactly the kind of deliberative patriot the Democrats keep idealizing... And what does he get? A U.S. congressman pointing fingers and screaming at him for "hijacking" the meeting? ...David Scott epitomizes not just what's wrong with the Dems, but what's wrong with the Democratic majority in Congress.

...

Someone please bring this quote from Thomas Jefferson to the good Congressman's attention: "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."

Yup, it's obvious that the nerve has been hit.

Arrogance is the new norm for these guys.

Klik,

Great post! Keep the news coming. I have a video of Democrat Dan Maffei wagging his finger at constituents, because they want him to read the bills in congress.

Dan Maffei had the stones to tell all his constituents that he was offended and insulted that we would expect him to read congressional bills. These guys are out of control and need to get put back in their place.

Even though the Dems are running scared (obviously), do you think it is "too little too late" for our side?

I fear this socialistic mess is going to be rammed down our throats, whether we like it or not...

Talk about name calling!
The republican invented it.

They've been TAUGHT how to respond; you can SEE it. It's THE AUDIENCE'S FAULT. EVERY SINGLE TIME..do you see that, too?

It's DEFLECT, ACCUSE, DEFLECT, BELITTLE...just DO NOT ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

America's waking up...FINALLY!
And, how wonderful that your local TV carried it. OUrs here in LA would be hard pressed if it made a lib look as bad as this.

Lynne..can you tell us how Republicans invented name calling? When and where and when did they ever get away with what the leftwingers are now? I'm seriously curious.

See how outraged the left is about that poster of Obama in socialist white face? They did that to Bush and nobody spoke up! Bush kept saying "Look, it's their right.."

Instead, with Barack, we have a president who, for the first time, belittles Conservatives BY NAME. Thug politics...how sad for our country.

Good call RK and whenever dems become apoplectic we've hit some good sweet spots

Teresa: Scott is a hack. But I have to give him credit. He SAID what all the other Dem Congressmen probably have been thinking.

NG: Now that we've hit the nerve, let's keep pounding on it.

TCL: It's really disgusting.

CG: Thanks. I watched your video. Amazing.

Sue: I think we can beat ObamaCare, and I think we have the momentum. The Dems will have to pass a health care bill in some form in order to save face. We have to focus on minimizing the damage. We have to kill the "public option" and we have to keep private insurance alive.

Congressional Dems are in a tight spot. At this point they know they're in trouble no matter what they do. On the one hand they upset Obama and the party leadership, on the other hand they upset the voters. Who do they fear most? And what do they fear more...immediate pain from their comrades in the party, or delayed pain from the elections of 2010?

JINGOIST: We'll keep the heat on and turn it up.

WHT: They've lost touch with reality.

Z: "It's THE AUDIENCE'S FAULT. EVERY SINGLE TIME..do you see that, too?"

Absolutely. It makes the look so unprofessional and petty when they do that.

Ray: They're really starting to look like they've been cornered.

Can't a black man get angry when he's asked a question he doesn't want to answer?

Can't a black man use circular logic to turn the tables on a constituent whose opinion he doesn't give one damn about?

What is this country coming to?

Scott used righteous indignation to get out of having to explain his stand on Obamacare to a smarter-than-average constituent who will not accept a meaningless platitude for an answer.

Having a face-to-face meeting with the doctor effectively keeps the doctor from "infecting" others in the crowd with his bothersome questions. Divide and conquer is a tried and true strategy.

Sorry for not commenting early on this one, been busy.

This man's arrogance was on complete display for all to see, and he knows it.

The recent events at his office I also find suspicious as well.

Maybe he should invite the doctor over for a beer. After all, a doctor asking a representative a straight forward question about health care reform was a stupid thing.
