According to CBS News, Jared Loughner, 22, reportedly used a semi-automatic pistol with an extra-large ammo clip in the attack that critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), killed at least five others — including a 9-year-old girl, a federal judge and one of Giffords’ aides — and wounded several more people.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.
The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
At least five other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.
Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up firing indiscriminately and then ran off, Michaels said. According to other witnesses, he was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody.
Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Several people were shot Saturday at a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, a spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff's Department said.
The shooting occurred at a Safeway shortly after 10 a.m. MST, according to sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jason Ogan.
A couple of victims with gunshot wounds have arrived at Northwest Medical Center, according to spokesman Richard Parker.
"They've been coming in the last 10 minutes. I'm not sure of the severity of their injuries," he said. Ogan said the motive for the shooting is unclear.
"We're just trying to sort this out right now," he said.

Whomever shot at the innocent victims including the honorable Judge, the 9 yo girl, and Rep. Giffords in AZ has no place nor esteem in my political or moral belief system. I value and uphold the rule the rule of law. We the People are victims when are elected officials--irregardless of party--are gunned down and slaughtered.
Indeed, Giffords had recently renewed my personal admiration by taking part in the reading of the Constitution on the House floor.
I pray Rep. Giffords will pull through and be able to return and serve the district and also for the families of those who lost loved ones today.
Does it really matter whether the killer was a Democrat or Republican? I am quite sure that the mother of that 9 yr old girl is not wondering what party he belonged too. Or the family of the judge. Or the other dead and critically wounded. What matters is that we have become a nation of no compassion,or hate,of self interests and nothing more. We need not worry about the terrorist from outside our borders,we are destroying ourselves quite nicely.The issue of why this killer was issued a gun while having a criminal record and history of mental illness should be addressed and rapidly. The media and its ilk would do much better just reporting the news and not adding its conjecture to the mix. This is a tragedy on so many levels, yet so many in here would rather cast hatred and bile than to show respect and compassion to those who died and are injured.
