Barney Frank and Scott Brown

Barney Frank's initial reaction to Scott Brown's Massachusetts victory was a bit surprising:

I have two reactions to the election in Massachusetts. One, I am disappointed. Two, I feel strongly that the Democratic majority in Congress must respect the process and make no effort to bypass the electoral results.

When did Barney become such a reasonable guy?

I wondered if Scott Brown had carried Barney's district, but I could not find hard data specifically pertaining to Barney's gerrymandered neck of the woods. Just for you, I chased down the data and crunched the numbers.

The results confirmed the stories circulating on the web. Amazingly, Scott Brown did win the majority of the votes in Barney Frank's Congressional District in Tuesday's election.

Here are the raw numbers:

Scott Brown: 116,765

Martha Coakley: 113,831

Joe Kennedy: 2,069

In 2008, Frank won his district with 64.3% of the vote. In 2006, he was uncontested and took 98.48% of the vote.

Perhaps with the results of Tuesday's election in hand, Frank will feel compelled to take his constituents' concerns more seriously. Maybe he'll cut back on insults:

Chuck Schumer: Windbag of extra-ordinary windiness. Influence: 12, Contemptibility Index: 9, Annoyance Level: 98%, ACU Rating: 0.

Dennis Kucinich:  He's an idiot who publically professes his belief in UFOs, and he's a bit to the left Perez Hilton, but he's funny and not very annoying, so he's only on the runners up list.  Influence: 2, Contemptibility Index: 2, Annoyance Level: 55%, ACU Rating: 4.

6)  Harry Reid:  Senate majority leader and the voice of reason and sunny optimism, Harry Reid is never distracted by thoughts about the long term (like next week).  Harry speaking about the surge in Iraq: "I believe...that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week."  Harry speaking about the delay in coming up with an auto bailout bill: "I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. 5)  Barney Frank:  Still an influential member of Congress despite the fact that while serving in Congress, he paid $80 for sex with Steve Gobie, a man who eventually shacked up with Barney and brought clients into Barney's apartment.  Not content to live the quiet life of a simple whoremonger, Barney has positioned himself to become one of the most dangerous congressmen of all time. Barney is at the center of our current economic implosion—in fact—Barney's fingerprints are all over the financial fiasco.  Influence: 15, Contemptibility Index: 10, Annoyance level: 90%, ACU Rating: 0.

There's been a lot of discussion about greed and corruption in America, particularly as it relates to current economic turmoil.  The corporate world is a favorite scapegoat.  Are corporations the most destructive element of greed in our society?  Consider the following:

• Corporations control millions, and in some cases, billions of dollars of wealth.
  
• The U.S. Federal Government makes decisions involving hundreds of billions, sometimes trillions of dollars of wealth.
  
• Corporations depend on voluntary transactions.
  
• The Federal Government confiscates wealth by force.
  
• Corporations are generally expected to provide some kind of product or service for the money they acquire.
  
• Federal officials can do whatever they want with your money.
  
• Corporations held accountable by their stockholders, customers, and in some cases by Congress. They must take these pressures into account on a continuous basis.  If a corporation fails to balance these competing pressures, it faces extinction.  Corruption is swiftly punished.
  
• Federal officials are held accountable by their constituents, but voters are lazy and apathetic.  Elections come along periodically, but voter turnout is generally very low.  In contrast, special interest groups and lobbyists are motivated, organized and energetic.  Corruption is therefore practically guaranteed. 
  
• When greed and corruption suck the life out of a corporation, thousands of lives may be adversely affected.
  
• Greed and corruption in the Federal Government have the potential to drag the entire world into a global economic depression.
