Slurs or Slander?

The Tea Party Movement: A multi-ethnic coalition of racist evil-mongers.

By now, most political junkies have heard the accusations:

The media claimed that members of the Congressional Black Caucus were called n*ggers and spat on by tea party protesters as they walked from the Longworth office building to the Rayburn office building. At least one report said that it was “a chorus” of racist hatred. Reporters from ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX News, (including Bill O’Reilly), MSNBC, etc. reported on this horrible story.

These actions have been repeatedly condemned by right-of-center media outlets.

But there's a big problem with these condemnations: We don't know what actually happened...

Rep. Andre Carson, Indiana Democrat, who is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, claims that "tea party" protesters hurled racial slurs at fellow CBC member Rep. John Lewis, Georgia Democrat. Mr. Carson said that "hundreds of people" were chanting, "Kill the bill," and he heard "at least 15 times" the "n – word" being thrown around.

[emphasis added]

Many have suggested that we should take the Congressmen at their word. Really? Congressmen? Their word?

Even if the Congresspeople sincerely think they heard racial slurs from protesters on Saturday, I'd like to know what really happened. Too bad no one has any video recordings. Oh, wait...cameras were everywhere:

In fact, a video was later released that proved that there was no “chorus” of racist hatred and no one screamed the n-word. It was all a lie.

Now here is more proof.

There were several cameras filming the democratic representatives as they walked to the Rayburn Office Building. And, the representatives had at least two cameras filming the entire event. (It was almost as if they were expecting something to happen?)

Is there still a little wiggle room that would allow us to give members of the CBC some benefit of doubt? Maybe. But no one making accusations has named any names...no arrests were made. Many videos of the events, many photos...no slurs captured, no bad behavior chronicled.

Accusations as serious as these should not be taken lightly. If the accusations are based on a shred of truth, we need to know who the offenders are and who they are connected with so the blame can be appropriately assigned. Let the good people of the CBC review the tapes. Point out the offenders...or take back the accusations.

Party Like It's 1773!

The original Boston Tea Party was on December 16, 1773. The incident remains an iconic event of American history, and has often been referenced in other political protests.

On April 15, 2009, through their participation in the nationwide tax day tea parties, taxpayers all over the country will be protesting our new era of unfettered government greed.  What do the tax day tea parties represent?  Glad you asked  here are some statements from those who are leading the way:

While bailing out the irresponsible parties, the government is pushing hard-working Americans to the brink of another revolution. As the government works to redistribute wealth, taxpayers work more for less  and the government takes more and more.

This is truly a non-partisan and grass-roots event. Anyone in elected office, at whatever level, cannot afford to ignore this many unhappy voters.  We want to send the message that these elected officials work for us. We hired them, and we can fire them. If they don't want to listen to the American people and their constituents, we will work tirelessly to retire them when they are up for re-election.

We are proud of our country and will do everything we can to stand shoulder to shoulder and protect the constitution and this great land. It is our responsibility as free citizens to speak up when we are deeply concerned about actions which will affect so many people  including our children and grandchildren.  We are not subjects; we are citizens.

There will be even more tea parties on July 4. This is just the beginning!

Why I tea party like it’s 2099
I attend the tea parties as a way of showing that it saddens me to know that people who might have otherwise cured a horrible disease, designed grand buildings, created art and music, invented a car that runs on kumquats that people actually want to buy...are now spending most of their energy trying to figure out a way to write off their lawnmowers as dependents.

Tea Bags For Washington?

Tomasz Sienicki,  Creative Commons Attribution 2.5

The Tea Party protests, in their current form, began in February when Rick Santelli, the On Air Editor for CNBC, set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress... specifically, the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and the pork filled budget.

Since that time the Tea Party idea has grown considerably.  Tens of thousands of people all over the country have attended Tea Party protests.  Many thousands more will join in protest on April 15.  Countless others have been inspired to send a message directly to the greedy pigs in Washington to let them know they've crossed the line: they've recklessly burdened future generations, they've seized too much money and they've usurped too much power.

How best to send this message?  A tea bag?  An appealing idea, but probably not a good one.

In most respects, Washington goes about it's business with a September 10th mentality.  But when it comes to the personal safety of our fearless federal officials, the lessons of 9-11 are still fresh.  So would your tea bag make it to your senator or end up in the trash?  I hate to think that such a good idea would literally go to waste. So I offer other suggestions:

Mail empty tea bags, strings with the labels, pictures of tea, Tea Party postcards or other Tea Party stuff to:

1.  Your Representative
2.  Your Senator
3.  Your Governor
4.  The IRS
6.  Treasury Secretary Geithner
7.  Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid or Barney Frank
8.  Arlen Specter, Olympia Snow or Susan Collins

Another idea: A well thought out and personal letter, accompanied by a photocopy of your voter registration card would grab the attention of lawmakers.

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.  Let's hit the government with multiple intimidating waves of [peaceful and legal] protest.  April 1, April 15, July 4, December 16...
