On Monday, Martha Coakley performed quite poorly at the final debate in Massachusetts for the open U.S. Senate seat. Her most notable gaffe was her declaration that we should cut and run from Afghanistan because the terrorists are all gone. *gasp*
That gaffe led directly to the next campaign disaster.
On Tuesday, while her opponent was on the campaign trail back home in Massachusetts, Coakley was in D.C. collecting contributions from K Street corruptocrats. Immediately after the fundraiser, Coakley was asked about her Afghanistan gaffe by a reporter who was promptly attacked by one of Coakley's staffers.
As if to definitively prove that she wants to lose this race, Coakley has added a touch of regal snobbery to the mix with comments about those icky commoners at Fenway Park. Her loyal supporters at The Boston Globe reluctantly take note:
...there is a subdued, almost dispassionate quality to her public appearances, which are surprisingly few. Her voice is not hoarse from late-night rallies. Even yesterday, the day after a hard-hitting debate, she had no public campaign appearances in the state.
Coakley bristles at the suggestion that, with so little time left, in an election with such high stakes, she is being too passive.“As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?'' she fires back, in an apparent reference to a Brown online video of him doing just that...
Shaking hands? At Fenway Park? How vulgar!
Maybe Coakley forgot how near and dear Fenway was to Ted Kennedy, who threw out the first pitch last season in what everyone knew would be his last opening day. Or the Tribute to Kennedy in August at Fenway.
Insulting Fenway fans. Now that's a plan.
Yes, a very good plan...for self-destruction.
