Obama's Slo-Mo Train Wreck

Photo Credit, Associated Press; Hat Tip, Christopher Oakley

Two important notes:

1. These numbers come from two of the most important members of Obama's Media Support Team, i.e., CBS and the New York Times.

2. This poll included all adults, including adults who are unlikely to vote. Polls that include adults who are not expected to vote tend to skew favorably for Democrats.

With those caveats, Obama's bad news is probably even worse than it would appear at first glance:

"Obama’s approval rating has slipped to 43% - his lowest so far - while his disapproval rating has reached an all-time high in this poll of 50%..."

The hope came early, finally comes the change. Even apart from his job performance, Americans don't like Obama anymore:

"And for the first time, more Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Barack Obama than a favorable one..."

The unfavorable opinion has surged to its current high from only 34% in January.

Discussion: Memeorandum

UPDATE: Some train wrecks are fun to watch!

Americans Unhappy With Dems, Obama, GZ Mosque

Here are some highlights from the new WaPo/ABC poll. Note: this was a not a survey of voters (who tend to be more conservative than non-voters), but of the general adult population...
  • 57% of Americans disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy (44% strongly disapprove).
  • 58% of Americans disapprove of the way Obama is handling the federal budget deficit, 39% approve.
  • 72% disapprove of the way the Democrat-run U.S. Congress is doing its job.
  • Only 24% think the economy is getting better
  • 66% oppose "plans for a Muslim community center and place of worship in Lower Manhattan, near the site of the former World Trade Center."
  • 19% of Americans consider themselves to be politically liberal, compared with 40% who consider themselves to be conservative.
  • Asked of likely voters: "If the election for the U.S. House of Representatives in November were being held today, would you vote for (the Democratic candidate) or (the Republican candidate) in your congressional district?" Answer... Republican 53%, Democrat 40%
The clouds keep getting darker and darker for the Dems.

Obama's Historic Free Fall

Whether you follow Zogby, Gallup or Rasmussen, if you watch the polls, you've noticed Obama's precipitous decline. Even The New York Times has taken note:

"...in the history of polling, no newly elected American president has fallen this far this fast."

What to do?

Ed Morrissey points out the inconvenient truth:

"Getting on TV didn’t help. Staying away from TV doesn’t appear to be helping, either. Barack Obama has to wonder how exactly he will stop the bleeding..."

Here's some surprisingly sensible advice from the King of ObamaCons, David Brooks:

"...[Obama] has to align his proposals to the values of the political center: fiscal responsibility, individual choice and decentralized authority."

In other words, Obama should keep his campaign promises. Ordinarily, that would be very sound advice. But the problem with that strategy is that Obama has made too many contradictory promises. During his campaign, Obama created a loony fantasyone in which government grows, spending is kept under control, taxes don't go up, and the economy improves.

Insanity.

Obviously this was a message that succeeded not on the basis of its substance, but through the force of Obama's media-driven charisma. As the The Wall Street Journal put it, "The politics of charisma is so Third World. Americans were never going to buy into it for long."
